Fractional laser resurfacing - We use CO2 laser which at 10600 nm is considered 'king' of ablative lasers. This is used for wrinkles, pigmentation, sun spots, texural changes and acne and other scars.

Laser peel - A superficial laser peel can be performed if concern is mainly colour and texture of skin. This is a minimal downtime procedure and does not have risks associated with deeper chemical peels.

What conditions can be treated?
CO2 fractional laser therapy is ideal for the treatment of sun damage, brown spots, fine lines, wrinkles, skin laxity/texture and acne scars. If you have spent years in the sun, especially without adequate sun protection, then you know what it can do to your skin. Wrinkles, skin discolouration, sun spots, skin laxity may be reduced or eliminated with fractional laser. Also, if you have deeper wrinkles, smokers lines, scars from acne or other skin injuries, then you may also be a candidate for this procedure at aggressive settings. While the aging process cannot be stopped, with proper care you can maintain your rejuvenated skin’s appearance for many years!

How CO2 fractional laser is different?
Before fractional laser, many patients endured long, often painful laser resurfacing procedures with lengthy recoveries in order to achieve skin rejuvenation. Historically, many procedures involved vaporising an entire layer and surface of skin, resulting in significant downtime, discomfort and prolonged redness. In addition, old CO2 lasers could not treat non-facial areas like the neck and décolletage easily because skin in these areas did not heal as well as the face.

So how is smartxide DOT laser different or better?
This utilizes a ‘dot’ pattern to create thousands of microscopic perforations in the skin while leaving the areas around each ‘dot’ intact. This fractional laser allows for the skin to heal more quickly from the edge of these tiny ‘dots’. The overall procedure is safer, faster and more efficient. Dr Gheyi can customise treatment specifically to the patient and even modify treatment during the procedure for various skin challenges or problem areas.
The CO2 fractional laser precisely creates thousands of microscopic holes in your skin, which induce immediate skin tightening and stimulate new collagen growth. Patients are often amazed at how tight their skin feels immediately after the procedure. Fractional laser is designed to improve the skin’s texture and tone and to fight fine lines, deep wrinkles, and acne scars. With the stack mode now available on the new DOT laser-safety and results have been further improved whilst reducing recovery period at the same time. This laser allows infinite combinations to treat different indications. It can be used for a very superficial weekend peel to conventional laser resurfacing for striking results. We also use it for vapourising skin blemishes and lumps and bumps.

What are the advantages over deep chemical peels [TCA and phenol]?
Dr Gheyi does not perform any deep chemical peels as it is not possible to achieve precise control with these and chance of complications is higher. Deep chemical peels also result in prolonged downtime. Lasers are precision tools and achieve better results more safely and consistently.

What is the procedure like?
Prior to the procedure a topical anaesthetic may be applied to your skin to make the procedure more comfortable during the treatment. You may also be given some medication including a mild sedative. As you lie comfortably on the couch, your skin is immediately renewed by fractional laser. The doctor will move the laser around the treatment area utilising customised settings. After the laser procedure is completed, a cold compress will be applied. Your skin will be red, similar to sunburn. You will need someone to drive you home. The redness continues for a few days. By day three or four, you may experience some peeling as your fresh and younger looking skin appears. During the recovery period you will apply a hydrating lotion to keep your skin moist and promote healing. In most cases, you may resume applying makeup after about three days. Application of PRP can reduce downtime and improve results.

How long does the procedure take?
In most cases, fractional laser can be performed in less than an hour. Local anaesthetic cream is applied for 1 hour prior to the procedure. Deeper or conventional laser resurfacing takes longer and nerve blocks or tumescent anaesthesia may be required. This should be considered a surgical procedure and proper pre and post-operative care is required. A course of medication may be prescribed.

How many treatments are required with fractional laser?
In most cases, excellent results can be achieved in a single session. However, persons with severe wrinkling or deep acne scars may benefit from a series of treatments spaced about one month apart. Dr Gheyi will advise you on what results you can reasonably expect.

What precautions do I need to take after the procedure to maintain my results?
Basic skin care, thorough cleaning and sun protection are key to ensuring your results endure. Wear sunscreen and avoid direct sun exposure whenever possible, but especially in the weeks following treatment.

Is fractional laser safe?
CO2 dot fractional laser has received clearance from the US Food & Drug Administration.
Fractional laser is safer than traditional laser resurfacing treatments. Because the fractional laser creates a shallower, wider pattern, it promotes rapid healing. Fractional laser is minimally invasive and extremely safe, while delivering excellent results.
